PHILIPPA
BEVERIDGE

Artist’s Statement
The Ice Maiden Collection
2008 - 2009
“Philippa Beveridge’s work
has to do with the personal, with feelings, with reactions to the past,
and with relics of lost associations as metaphors for memory.”
Dr Helmut Ricke, Curator at the Museum Kunst Palace, Düsseldorf
My work is concerned with
time and memory: history and its associations, absence and displacement,
the fleeting and transitory.
I work primarily in
kiln-formed and surface-decorated glass combined with other materials and
I frequently employ traditional printing techniques to produce my work.
In 1993 the 2,400-year-old
body of a young woman from an ancient nomadic group of warriors was found
in a burial chamber in Siberia. Renamed the Ice Maiden, her body displayed
elaborate tattoos on her shoulders, arms and hands. Tattoos, an ancient
form of body adornment, often depicted totem animals as spirit guardians
and symbols which connected the traveller with home as well as providing a
visual record of where they had been.
I
have recycled the glass bottle to create three works inspired by the story
of the Ice Maiden and history of tattoos. Using the imagery of old maps
and ancient beasts, the collection reflects on the interpretation of
memory, the journey and talismans.

Statement
My
semi-abstract arrangements explore light, colour and form and in a
structural and spacial environment. Although geometric in appearance they
are derived from the real world and incorporate architectural elements:
roofs, eves, quoins and corners. I am contrasting reflected and absorbed
light, sometimes the transmitted light of stained glass windows, exploring
bright and dark spaces, the internal, the external, the steep and the
flat. The relationship between dual panels is important, the rhythm and
balance, and the synchronism or counterpoint that plays on the eye.

BRUCE MARKS
'My birthplace Africa, has had
the greatest influence on my work.
During my last visit, I
immersed myself in the raw energy of the country and found inspiration in
the traditions of everyday life there - its splendour, power, and spiritual
beauty.
Most of my recent work is
sculptural. Pieces are made in different stages, and assembled hot. I
concentrate on colour and surface texture and achieve these through a range
of processes including sandblasting, carving and etching, creating details
that capture the light and allow it to illuminate the piece.
I rarely sketch as I already
have a very clear image in my head before I start.
Using
adapted kitchen implements and plumbing tools I mould and sculpt the molten
glass – creating imaginary moments of Africa'.

'I
have been working with glass for twenty-five years now, experimenting with
many
different
techniques. For me it is the most fascinating material. Glass inspires me
again
and again
to explore its wonderful qualities.
I am
moved by the change glass undergoes in my work: the transformation of clear
sheets to saturated coloured shapes, or the translucent melting structures
with linear textures or expressive patterns. It is exciting to catch the
light and bind it up, to weave it into a cloth of colour, air and light."

JESSIE LEE
I fell in love with glass for
its metamorphic nature and its transparent and translucent properties. I am
greatly influenced by light and space. Particularly the void within the
object. Glass is the perfect artistic medium as it allows the viewer to see
into and sometimes through the object.
Although I find inspiration in
geometry and symmetry, I like to work spontaneously and intuitively,
allowing the unconscious mind to guide the conscious act. My work is almost
always compromised in some way as a metaphor for the uncertainty of life.
I am Chinese by origin, born
in Malaysia, and now live in England. Initially, I trained and worked
successfully as a potter and sculptor I was inspired to work with glass in
2005 initially drawn by the combination of form coupled with the possibility
of vibrant colour. Currently, I am taking a Masters Degree in Applied Arts
at University for the Creative Arts, Farnham specializing in glass.
As an artist I work in
different medium. Besides using glass and ceramic, I am also a printmaker
specializing in monotype prints.
I have had numerous
commissions and exhibitions.

body of work takes its inspiration from the English canal system and its
juxtaposition of industrial and natural environments. The fascinating
contrast of colour, texture and density found in these early creations of
the industrial revolution have always intrigued and inspired me, especially
where the wood of the lock gates meets the water of the canal.
Here, the taming of natural elements by epic endeavours of engineering is
most dramatically revealed. And it is this revelation that my first
creations seek to capture and celebrate.
As part of
this process I have drawn on the harmony and balance that exists between
wood and glass. I have used wood from the lock gates and directly from
nature, combining these with glass to create a sense of interplay between
the solid and the liquid.
From the
central theme of industrial objects in a natural environment, I now want to
focus more on the industrial objects themselves – objects that have often
been discarded or no longer have a use. I am keen to explore what these
objects can mean to us, such as the fragility of the once strong metal that
has been corroded by the elements and rusted over time. This work is also
about memory – the memory of the object itself which may no longer be used
and the historical footprint of the fabrication process itself. I am
committed to preserving these small histories through the medium of
sculpture.
I work
predominately with a casting technique taken directly from large scale
industrial components – bolts, rivets, lengths of chain and metal rings used
for mooring ships whilst in dock – which I reproduce in glass. I then marry
these new glass forms with pieces of wood, either in its natural state from
fallen trees perhaps, or pieces that have been worked by hand, such as
remnants from old buildings or wooden components from long forgotten
contraptions. Working with discovered objects often allows the object itself
to dictate the direction of the work, which then grows and develops
organically.
In
creating this dialogue between the past and present – between glass and wood
– my burning aim is to make people think, in a more abstract way, about the
past and how it is changing and sometimes being lost. Ultimately I would
like to be involved in urban regeneration projects, returning my work to the
environment from which it was inspired.

My
art is about my journey through life…
I am fascinated by the robust, dynamic nature of glass and I
love exploring this wonderful material that is beautiful yet
dangerous…versatile
yet contradictory.
I like to combine literary
elements with simple, considered layers and kiln processes. My ideas are
intuitive, tangible and unconventional, and my imagination is dominated by
abstraction, I try to capture thoughts and feelings characterised by colour,
texture, pattern and detail. Consequently, my interest in psychological
approaches to art and my search for self-awareness means I depict covertly
emotional themes.

Exchange of Information Series 310 mm high 2007 |
David
Reekie - Exchange of Information Series
Throughout
history humankind has had a deep and often mystical relationship with
birds. They have been seen as Innocent companions and for tellers of our
future. In this series this innocence is questioned. The bird in these
pieces has become a symbol for unreliability and mistrust in our society
suggestive of how information can be used against us. In each piece you
are unsure if the relationship or conversation is all that it seems. Is
the bird a passive listener or an agent who will misuse the information
being relayed?
The strange little ceramic figurines or found objects I have used have a
dark innocence of their own. Although they are mass produced and quickly
hand painted in a spontaneous way, they have a quality and colour tone
that lends itself well to this new body of work.

Staffordshire Polytechnic. He moved to Norwich in 1986 where he set up his
own studio. In 1988 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study
Alternative Architectural Glass in U.S.A.

University of Wolverhampton UK.
Statement
My work is
influenced by man’s reaction and adaptation to the society in which he
lives. We live in a world that grows more complex and difficult to
comprehend, with its tensions and temptations that pulls us in different
directions. These conflicts provide ideas from which I create characters
and situations and provide me with a constant source of material for my
work. I devise surreal settings showing how we try to cope with the very
limited and purely imagined space that we have created for ourselves.
My main medium is
glass and over several years I have developed my own lost wax casting
technique.

CATHERINE
HOUGH

I have worked continuously as
a designer maker since leaving Stourbridge College of Art in 1978. I spent
two years as artist in residence at Royal Brierley Crystal making one-off
pieces in glass and metal. Then in 1980 I joined the Glasshouse in London
where my style of thick clear blown glass, enhanced by the use of cold
techniques, to enrich the form and reveal its inner life began to evolve. By
1985 and the formation of Glass-Works(London)Ltd, my work encompassed
repeatable functional pieces and deeply carved one-off forms with a purely
sculptural identity. In 1997 I formed my own company, Catherine Hough Glass.
All my work is based on free
blown forms using a mass of clear glass which is then transformed through
the use of cold techniques such as carving, cutting and texturing with
diamond and carborundum wheels, grinding and polishing, and sandblasting and
brushing. My interest in these techniques arose from a desire to further
develop the blown form, rather than for surface decoration as they had
traditionally been used.
Ideas and their development
have evolved during my many years of practice, but there are some themes
that have been fairly constant. Pebbles, geological strata, birds, fish and
plants are a constant source of inspiration. Pieces on these themes include
‘Dancing Bottle’ a winged form in the Crafts Council Collection, and a three
part ‘pebble’ structure in the V & A Museum in London.
In recent years my work has
been based on large clear hollow forms with more interior space. Through the
varied positioning of forms with no fixed base, or the use of multiple
forms, I am exploring the reaction of changing light, reflection and the
inter-relationship of form and space. This continues to evolve with a new
emphasis on the manipulation of natural images and the interaction of form,
line, movement and transparency.
