Artist’s statement

I have always been drawn to printmaking.  It is the art form where I feel at my most creative. I embarked on my printmaking career at two different printing studios in Stockton on Forest.  I learnt collagraph and etching intaglio techniques under the tutelage of Peter Wray & Judy Collins and explored relief printing with linocuts using the studio facilities of Catherine Sutcliffe-Fuller.  I have recently set up my own printing studio in my home village near York which gives me greater scope to experiment.

I draw inspiration for my printmaking for the patterns, textures, shapes and colours I see in the world around me and a lot of my work is also an expression of my Christian spirituality.

I enjoy exploring different printmaking techniques and I usually work in a very unplanned way letting the plate come to life as different elements are added, often drawing on many different materials and techniques to make one plate. The choice of paper and colours of the inks used to print the plate all allow for further spontaneity which culminates in a unique work of art emerging from the rollers of the press.
