COLIN REID - Glass
Colin Reid is one of Britain's
most highly regarded artists in glass. Most of his one off pieces of cast
optical glass are sold abroad and his work is represented in many important
collections which include The V & A, London ( 3 acquisitions ), The Corning
Museum of Glass New York ( 2 acquisitions ) and The Tokyo National Museum of
Modern Art.
An associate member of the Royal
Society of British Sculptors, Colin Reid has been commissioned to cast several
major sculptural installations, including pieces for 3 cruise liners, company
reception areas and a 3.5 m high piece in glass and steel for Shanghai Library,
China. Colin studied art at St Martins School of Art in the early seventies,
after which he worked in industry as a Scientific Glassblower and ran his own
studio in London in 1977 and 1978. After graduating from Stourbridge School of
Art with a First Class degree in 1981, Colin set up his studio in
Gloucestershire and between then and now has participated in over 200
exhibitions around the world, including 11 solo shows in the USA.
Colin uses optical glass for its purity and consistency. Elements
of his sculptures are sometimes cast from natural forms (old timbers of slabs
of rock), but the intrigue and excitement in his work is mostly achieved by the
cutting and polishing of one or more faces to create reflections within the
piece or make most use of the refractive properties of the glass.
