Like my background, the range of my work is varied
& somewhat eclectic. A National Diploma in 1988 saw me studying graphics
& illustration although I subsequently moved into natural science, working
in entomology for 8 years.
I have always had a strong drive to be creative, but
it wasn’t until 1995 that I was introduced to the addictive nature of clay
whilst attending an evening class. I continued with part time courses until the
birth of my daughter in 2000. The following year I started the full-time HND
Design Crafts course at York College. Since graduating I have been part of the
first intake of the Visual Enterprise Scheme also based at York College, with
support from the Arts Council, helping artists further their businesses.
I am passionate about my work; it fulfils that part
of me that expresses the inexpressible. I enjoy working with both clay &
glass, being inspired by the technical elements & relishing the challenge
of problem solving with these two related yet distinct materials.
Currently I am exploring fine white-bodied clays
such as porcelain & bone china. My early pieces were often literal
representations of natural forms, but with experience I find that the
distillation of form brings with it a much greater reward. When colour is used
I turn to smoke firing to create pattern & tone that is organic in nature.
If there is a single unifying theme to what I make, it is my love of the
tactile & fluid nature of curves.
