Car Boot Art – an interactive exhibition

Friday 26th May 2017,  6.00pm – 8.30pm come and try your hand at Car Boot Art under the inspiration of Robin Gledhill and Brian Lewis.

This interactive exhibition is a collaboration between artist Robin Gledhill and poet, writer and artist Brian Lewis. Brian collects toy figures such as ‘superheroes’ from Car Boot sales, then Robin recontextualizes them by placing them within various mise-en-scènes and writing captions to go with them, kind of like a 3D satirical cartoon!

You are invited to join Robin and Brian on the evening of Friday 26th May and during Saturday 27th May in creating temporary artwork installations. Give it a go, and the best will be put on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages.

Car Boot Art exhibition opening review

On a warm and humid evening, a short section of Stonegate was transformed by Brian Lewis and Robin Gledhill in to an impromptu art installation depicting ‘The joyous coronation of the queen of the May???’  It certainly created quite an impact and culminated in York’s Labour Party candidate Rachel Maskell paying the procession a visit and later viewing the exhibition upstairs in the gallery.

Accompanying the warmth of the evening there was a continual sound of mirth as people were entertained by the pen and ink drawings of cartoonist David Haldane, as well as interacting with the car boot figures, creating scenes and captions – some of which can be seen below.

If you were unable to attend the opening then do not despair as this exhibition runs until 6th September. We look forward to seeing you soon!
