Pamela Burrows and Oliver Vowles-Burrows
After graduating in
fine art at Salisbury School of Art and Camberwell, Pamela Burrows learnt
the craft of jewellery from her close friend Chris Burrows, later to be her
husband.
Together, with
Chris's craftsmanship and Pamela's artistic flair, the couple exhibtited and
sold their work at the Victoria and Albert Museum and in top galleries in
Britain, America, Japan and Germany.
Chris Burrows
career was cut short by Leukaemia, from which he died, and for several years
Pamela concentrated on bringing up her son Oliver.
In 1990, Pamela
resumed her jewellery making, answering requests from friends and galleries,
and soon she was back in production designing and making gold rings,
necklaces and errings for selling in craft galleries throughout Britain.
Oliver Vowles-Burrows
studied at Falmouth School of Art then trained in a jewellery design
workshop and has now joined Pamela in the business specialising in the
skilled task of setting the stones and taking an active role in the design
work.
Much of the
inspiration for Pamela's work comes from the dramatic scenery along the
North DEvon coast near her home in Bude. Her designs are free and irregular,
often featuring one or more semi precious stones, and waves or slabs of gold
that reflect the rugged cliffs and rock formations.
Pamela travels the
world to collect stones and likes to build a design around stones that have
interesting irregularities and inclusions. As a result, no two pieces are
ever alike, but always bear the distinctive look and appeal that
distinguishes her jewellery from any other makers.
In 1995, Pamela
was featured in a 30 minute ITV documentary, 'Jewellery Masterclass' which
reviewed her career and followed the progress of the designing and making of
a ring under Pamela's guidance. BACK TO TOP |
