Jane Duke

Jane Duke York Printmaker

Largely self taught, Jane Duke left her job at the University of York to become a full time artist in 2007. Having previously worked as a watercolourist and portrait painter for many years, she began the move into printmaking soon after this. Her watercolour background is still visible in the painterly character of her often vibrantly coloured prints.

She works in intaglio and relief methods including collagraph, woodcut and linocut. Her subject matter is mainly derived from the local environment, both natural and manmade, drawing on places, wildlife, glimpses and experiences, especially those which link our shared past to our common present.  She aims to describe the visible world in ways which look beyond first impressions, encouraging the viewer to pause and reassess what they see every day.

Jane is one of the organisers of the annual York Open Studios event and a founder member of York Printmakers.
